Resource utilization has direct impact on energy saving and cost reduction. In a word, it saves money. In cloud age, the increasing complexity of infrastructure and the variety of applications make it more challenging. Often we fear that higher resource utilization adds to the risk of violating SLA. But things changed since we have Docker.

By weaving Docker, Cgroup and a set of fine-grained feedback control together, we allow containers to respond to their high-priority neighbors, accommodate each other’s resource needs in real-time. The containers become “soft”, to give way if one needs more resource to fulfill its SLA, and to come back when more resource is not needed. Soft Container improves resource utilization while taking good care of SLA. We will show you how we designed the framework, how we use it to run critical apps, and the experience we gained.
